Twenty Four

Theia

The sound of the gun going off was still echoing in my ears, even as Gil started talking to the man in the chair. I flinched at the noise and the scene in front of me. Two men were dead. Killed by the man I’d become obsessed with. I’d always known Gil was dangerous but seeing him be the mafia boss was an entirely new experience. I had no idea what to think or feel about it.

“So, what’s your name?”

I jumped at the sound of the voice next to me. My head turned towards Gil’s friend. Edric didn’t look anything like how I imagined him when Gil had told me about his best friend and second-in-command. He was tall and lanky, with chestnut hair and hazel eyes behind a pair of wide-framed glasses. The other men in the room looked far more like they belonged in the mafia. They were in black suits and ties. Edric had a few buttons undone on his rather colourful shirt underneath a green bomber jacket and he was wearing beige chinos.

“Don’t tell me you’re one of those silent types, like Gil. I swear he’s a fucking nightmare to get anything out of.”

I wrapped my arms around my body.

“He told me I needed to stay silent,” I murmured, not wanting to draw attention to myself.

Gil was still talking to the man in the chair, but I tuned it out. Thinking about the fact he’d killed two people wouldn’t get me anywhere. The evidence was already in front of me, considering they were slumped in their chairs with bullet holes between their eyes. He hadn’t even hesitated. It was like his walls came down the moment he stepped into the warehouse, and he became Gilberto Villetti, mafia boss and silent killer. It reminded me of when he’d stabbed that guy in the hand the day we’d met.

By all accounts, I should be fucking terrified of him, but I wasn’t. Gil wouldn’t physically harm me. He’d hesitated to even be close to me at first. The memory of what he’d done to me earlier flooded my senses, making my skin grow hot.

Stop it! You can’t think about that right now.

Edric tutted next to me.

“Figures. Always so strict, that one. Doesn’t let me have any fun either.”

I looked down at the floor and tried not to smile. Gil certainly had “fun” with me this evening, though I’m not sure it was the type of fun Edric wanted to have with his best friend.

“I’m Theia.”

He put his hand out to me.

“Edric.”

I took his hand, letting him shake mine.

“I know who you are.”

His eyebrow curved upwards.

“Do you now? He didn’t say a word about you. Fucking typical. Such a secretive bastard.”

I hadn’t expected Gil to tell Edric about me. He was a private person, and while he’d told me about his friend, I was aware he had a hard time opening up to people. It was almost a miracle he’d told me anything about himself at all.

“Edric.”

Gil’s voice whipped around me.
